Leeds RAG Fashion Show

Our Charities: Behind Closed Doors

We need to start the conversation and we need to start it now.

What is domestic abuse? It is defined as being ‘any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse’. Types of abuse include, but are not limited to, emotional, physical, sexual, financial and psychological.

Government statistics show that ‘in the year ending March 2018, an estimated 2.0 million adults aged 16 to 59 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year (1.3 million women, 695,000 men)'. This statistic alone perfectly hammers home the reasons why the Leeds RAG Fashion Show is such an important event. No one should have to suffer in silence and we, as a community need to play our part.

This year, the Leeds RAG Fashion Show will be donating half of its profits to the Leeds based domestic violence charity, Behind Closed Doors. Behind Closed Doors aims to help women, men and children across the Leeds area escape abuse and help rebuild their lives through emotional support (counselling) and practical support (helping individuals financially). Their vision is ‘to provide high quality, accessible services, tailored to meet the needs of all individuals, whose lives are affected by domestic violence'.

The work Behind Closed Doors does for our local community is integral, especially because this sort of assistance and care is hard to come by and hard to fund. It is important to remember that the issue of domestic abuse is more prominent than you think. An article written last year by the Guardian states that in terms of ‘intimate partner abuse’ and other forms of violence, the most affected age group is those between 16-24, ‘the group to which most students also belong’. This means that young people all around university campuses are suffering in silence and we need to help break this silence. More awareness needs to be raised on campus about the signs of abuse and how to get help, charities like Behind Closed Doors are helping to educate young people on these issues but they cannot do this without our help.

Become a part of the movement to end domestic violence for good and ensure a safer, happier and better life for victims by either donating to any of the Leeds RAG Fashion Show committee's or model's donations pages or attending the Fashion Show itself. Even if these acts may seem small, in the end they make a massive difference; changing a life and helping individuals feel empowered, loved and supported.
